Sandton quiet after protests

Johannesburg - The situation was "quiet" in Marlboro Drive, Sandton, on Tuesday morning, after protesters barricaded the road the previous day, Gauteng police said.

"It's all quiet this morning, everything is back to normal," Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said.

Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said police had to use rubber bullets to subdue protesters on Monday and eight people were arrested for public violence.

At the time, police ministry spokesperson Zweli Mnisi said a white paper on safety and security under discussion aimed to replace the use of rubber bullets with water cannons. He said people also had to act responsibly during protests.

The Star reported on Tuesday that a Marlboro protester's hand was injured by a rubber bullet. Mogale said she had not received a report to this effect.
